This variety is originated from Spain. The clusters and berries are medium to large. The Carignan has an average potential to reach high sugar values. The color will rarely tend to be very dark. The tannins are often difficult; spicy, bitter and often lacking fruit and flexibility. Often vintners perform a "carbonic maceration" on these grapes, in order to prevent these symptoms.
