This variety originated from Spain, probably from around the region of Catalonia. The bunches are very large and the berries are medium to large. If the conditions are right (low yields, sunny ...) the Maccabeu can produce dry white wines, sparkling wines or fortified wines. The dry sparkling wines are light, pleasant, but often lack acidity and finesse. The flavorings (fennel) are very intense.
